Langtang trekking is a relatively short yet interesting trek, ideal for trekkers with limited time. Moreover, this region is relatively underrated in comparison to Everest Base camp trekking and Annapurna Base Camp trekking. This means trekkers who wish to incline trekking towards relatively less crowded trails this is the best one.
Besides this, Langtang trekking, in particular, is among the finest, mountain treks anyone could hope for. This region extends north of Helambu all the way up to the Tibetan border. At a minimum, it is a 10- day trek, including transportation time and a day above Kyangin, but if tourists are interested they can customize this trek from Kyangin for more than 10 days.
During trekking in Nepal, tourist should not have high expectation regarding the accommodation. The accommodation will be in simple lodges/tea-houses with a minimum facility. The same case applies to Langtang trekking. Further, these mountain regions lie in the rural area of Nepal and are yet untouched by urbanization.
Normally, this trek starts from Syabrubesi a 7 to 8-hour drive from Kathmandu through a paved highway that twists and climbs over the ridges to the Trishuli valley. After lunch, at the Trishuli valley (around 4-hour drive), continue to Dhunche, further, drive to Syabrubensi,(around 3-hour drive). Grandeur, view of Mountains Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal will take a breath away.
Further, the trekking will pass through few settlements and forest abundant with birds.
Moreover, if lucky, one may glimpse red panda and Himalayan black bear. The trail then makes a steep climb over a rocky ridge.
Further, the route crosses to the north bank of Langtang River, and then climbs alongside a series of waterfalls, through the dense forest of oak, maple, and alder. Now the trail, descend gently to Changtang, popularly known as Lama Hotel.
The trail climbs steeply (in some places very steep). Trekkers will have an enticing view of Langtang Lirung (7246m) appearing through the trees. Further descending downwards the rugged trail, will reach Ghora Tabela (2880m). From here the trail climbs more gradually to Langtang village and narrow valley begins to open out from this region. During spring this trail blossoms with varieties of rhododendrons.
Moreover, Langtang village is the headquarters for Langtang National Park.
The houses in this region is a Tibetan-style flat roof and are surrounded by stone walls enclosing fields of potatoes, wheat, buckwheat, turnips, and barley. Besides, the valley around here is a grazing paradise, rich in flower and grass. Butter is the main product of this region.
Today the trail passes through the yak pastures as the valley becomes border passing through a wooden bridge then climbs to Kyangin Gompa. On the way; we pass through village Mundu (3550m) and Sindhum. Tourists visit the famous cheese factory here. Moreover, there are plenty of interesting hikes from the Gompa.
A hike to Langshisakharka valley is amazing. Enjoy a spectacular view of the east face of Langtang Lirung along with the foot of one of its major glacier.
There are two viewpoints in the area. Kyanjin Ri, a two-hour climb or longer excursion is to Tsergo Ri(4984m), which is a four hours climb from Kyangin Gompa. Both of these viewpoints are visible from Kyangin Gompa and prayer flags mark their top.
The stunning views of mountains including Shishapangma across the Tibet border can be seen from the upper viewpoint. Return back to KyanginGompa.
Today, descend the same route to the Lama Hotel.
Moreover, the routes can be varied by staying on the north side of the river all the way to Syabrubesi, which has a Tibetan settlement camp and hot springs nearby. Buses leave from here to Kathmandu
Now one of the beautiful Langtang treks is over, however, the memory of the trails, people and the glorious mountains will remain in the memory. Further, after you reach Kathmandu there are plenty of surprises boxed for the trekkers.
Langtang trek is surprisingly a cultural trek. The inhabitants in these regions are culturally closer to their Tibetan cousins, on the other side if the range. Moreover, Langtang trek can be a cultural experience rather than a wilderness experience.
